| Local Interest (From the Mushroom Guide) The City of Salisbury in Wiltshire, England is a city steeped in history. Salisbury Cathedral was built using the stone from the original cathedral at the Iron Age hillfort of Old Sarum, the ruins of which can still be seen. Salisbury Cathedral sports the highest spire in England, rising 404 feet. The award winning Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum is well worth a visit, as is The Wardrobe (The Salisbury Museum of the Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment), the Queen Anne style Mompesson House, and Malmesbury House, which was partly designed by Sir Christopher Wren. A few miles from Salisbury is the magnificent megalithic stone circle of Stonehenge, which is not to be missed. Also nearby is Wilton House and the famous Wilton Carpet Factory. Salisbury has a thriving arts and entertainment scene, with the Salisbury Playhouse, the City Hall Entertainment Centre, Salisbury Arts Centre, and the Odeon Cinema, with possibly the grandest cinema foyer in the country. |
